About the Role:
The Cost Accountant is responsible for managing cost accounting functions within a manufacturing environment, including bill of materials management, inventory control, standard costing, margin analysis, and financial reporting. This role plays a critical part in analyzing direct and indirect manufacturing costs, supporting month-end close, and partnering with operations to improve profitability and cost transparency. The Cost Accountant also provides cross-functional accounting support, including backup responsibilities for payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management. This position is ideal for an accounting professional with strong manufacturing, MRP, and cost analysis experience seeking growth within a dynamic production setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and update standard costs within the bill of materials and ERP or MRP system.

  • Analyze standard versus actual costs and investigate cost variances.

  • Validate cost of goods sold and support month-end close processes, including journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations.

  • Coordinate and oversee physical inventory counts and cycle counts.

  • Review routers and compare to BOMs to identify discrepancies and ensure cost accuracy.

  • Perform in-depth analysis of direct manufacturing costs and overhead allocations.

  • Conduct materials costing, pricing analysis, and margin analysis to support operational decision making.

  • Establish and maintain cost accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.

  • Support implementation and optimization of MRP systems to ensure full system utilization and process documentation.

  • Review and approve inventory purchases and process inventory-related payables.

  • Create monthly financial statements and participate in budgeting and forecasting activities.

  • Support external audits and provide documentation as required.

  • Cross-train in accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management to ensure team coverage.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • Minimum of three years of accounting or finance experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Strong experience with cost accounting, standard costing, BOM management, and variance analysis.

  • MRP or ERP system experience within a manufacturing setting required.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including financial modeling and data analysis.

  • Experience participating in month-end close and financial statement preparation.

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret complex financial data.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional departments including operations and production.

  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.

Desired Qualifications:

  • CPA certification preferred.

  • Experience in medical device, precision manufacturing, or regulated manufacturing environments.

  • Experience supporting budgeting, forecasting, and cost control initiatives.

  • Knowledge of inventory accounting, overhead absorption, and manufacturing cost structures.
